Linguistic joke

Did you know that the Russian word for "sock" is "no sock"?

This is very old joke. When someone says something like that online, everyone starts posting "This is bayan!" meaning "Where have you found this old beardy joke? I've retweeted it twice already".

Bayan is sort of button accordion. Maybe this word is used because of the sound it makes: stretchy.

You could also not write "bayan!" but draw Russian Emoji ASCII picture :|||: (or :||||||||||: in critical situation).

Funny winter "button accordion"

First, "button accordion" is "bayan" (colloquial) in Russian and this word is used when someone is telling one very old (in twitter time it could be an hour old) joke. Also we call it "joke with beard" but bayan is way more modern.

Second, I laughed at this text. Maybe you will, too.

The St. Petersburg joke

-- Since when it's raining in St. Petersburg?
-- Since 1703.

p.s. 1703 is the year the city was founded.

Long and sad faces of Russians

I have bought and am currently reading a book in English about Russia and Russians. If it will remain as nice as in the beginning I will surely recommend it here later but now I wanna mention an interesting answer I found there.

The question is, why Russians always walk down the street or ride the public transport with such a serious and sad face. Nor Americans nor Europeans can understand that.

The answer or at least the attempt to find it is in the common Russian saying. Here you are.

"The laughter without reason is the sign of stupidity".
Hush! We try to seem clever ;)
